The Bay SportsMed WaiBOP United Youth Team has completed their ASB Youth League season with a comfortable win over last-placed Hawke’s Bay United.
Playing against a team that arrived with just the bare eleven, the WaiBOP lads made sure of the result early. Nate Kinney and Tom Probert, both better known for their prowess at the other end of the field, put the lads 2-0 ahead inside 20 minutes, during what was a period of almost complete dominance.
Just as Hawke’s Bay looked like they’d start bringing something to the match Jarrod Young pounced to make it 3-0 six minutes from the break.
We made four substitutions at half time and a fifth three minutes into the second half which led to Hawke’s Bay having their best period of the match during a far more evenly contested 15 minutes or so.
Connor Probert bent home his team’s fourth goal on 67 minutes as we re-asserted our control and began peppering William Stockhill in the visitors’ goal. Stockhill was superb in limiting the damage , with his efforts highlighted by an excellent triple save from Jono Viviani.
Youth Team Coach, Paul Drake, was delighted his team was able to finish the season on a high. “That was a decent performance from us. We could, and should, have had a few more goals but we finished the game early and did what we needed to do,” said Drake after the match.
Reflecting on the ASB Youth League season, Drake said he was reasonably happy with his team’s overall efforts. “It’s been a challenging season for us as we draw players from a wide area, but we’ve improved on last season and, but for a couple of average results, we could have been in the mix right at the top,” said Drake. “What might have been, I guess…”
