WaiBOP’s women’s national league side took another key step in their preparation for this year’s ASB Women’s League with a 2-1 win against a New Zealand Under 17 squad.
Playing under searing sun at Albany’s North Harbour Stadium, the sides cancelled out each other in a first half with few chances to either side.
Three goals in a 12-minute burst settled the result.
Rotorua United winger Paige Satchell put the Under 17s in front with a cracking long range shot in the 71st minute.
This fired the WaiBOP team into another gear and the experience of Claudelands Rovers defenders Kate Carlton, Kylie Jens and Alex Shadbolt showed as they pushed their side further upfield.
In the 76th minute, Tauranga’s attacking midfielder Chelsea Elliott smashed home a direct free kick from 25 metres.
Seven minutes later, substitute striker Kerri Gerrits slotted home the winner after breaking clear of her marker. Her goal capped an excellent weekend after she was named Waikato A division’s Player of the Year for the fourth time in five seasons.
Last weekend, the NWL squad beat a WaiBOP women’s All Stars selection 6-1.
The side, coached by Simon Mead and Ian Heath, starts its national league campaign next Sunday when they face Central at Palmerston North.
Supporters get their first chance to see the team at home for the first time this season on Sunday October 20 at St Peter’s School, Cambridge, when they take on Capital Football.
