WaiBOP United is pleased to announce the signing of attackers Federico Marquez, Ernesto Lopez and Godwin Darkwa, ahead of the 2014/15 ASB Premiership season.
Marquez (pictured above) will play for United after spending the 2013/14 season in Christchurch with Canterbury United, where he scored four goals in thirteen appearances, including the winner in Canterbury’s 1-0 victory over WaiBOP at ASB Football Park. During the 2014 winter season Marquez scored 12 goals in the Northern Region Football League (NRFL) Premier Division for Hamilton Wanderers and Ngaruawahia United.
Lopez and Darkwa head south after featuring prominently for their winter clubs. Lopez scored a club leading 13 goals for NRFL Division 1 side Mangere United during the winter, including several spectacular efforts. This was after a prolific 2013 campaign for Mangere. He now gets the opportunity to see if he can replicate this form at the highest local level.
Darkwa, a former New Zealand Under-17 representative, was a key contributor to Birkenhead United finishing runners-up in the NRFL Premier Division. He brings pace and trickery from out wide and will be expected to chip in with his share of goals during the summer.
Peter Smith, WaiBOP United Head Coach, is pleased to have three electric attackers in his squad for the season ahead. “Federico is well known in the Waikato after two goal laden seasons for Ngaruawahia and Wanderers and I hope he can bring the goals he scored there to the team this season,” said Smith. “Ernesto and Godwin are two new names to the area but they’re both exciting young players and fine attacking talents. My job is to find the best mix in our attacking third to allow these players to flourish and their job is to get me some goals. Simple really!”
Announcements on further player signings will follow soon.
