Defending champions Mainland Football claimed a 3-0 win over Waikato Bay of Plenty at ASB Football Park in Christchurch in what was the top-of-the-table clash coming into Sunday’s action.
Monique Barker gave the home side a dream start with a third minute opener, tapping in a rebound from a Annalie Longo shot and the Football Ferns midfielder doubled the lead in the 16th minute, tucking the ball under goalkeeper Amanda Wilshier.
Aimee Phillips completed the scoring mid-way through the second half with a weaving run through the visitors to push her side to the top of the table.
WaiBOP now sits in the third and final play-off spot with two regular season games remaining. Next Sunday’s match against the fourth-placed NZF Development side now looms as crucial for both teams’ post-season hopes.
