In the late game of an ASB Women’s League double header, played at Seddon Field in Auckland, the New Zealand Development team moved into the all-important third place with a 6-2 victory over Waikato Bay of Plenty.
Paige Satchell and Tayla Christensen, both from the Waikato BOP Federation area, each scored twice for the victors, while respective Football Ferns and age-group internationals Daisy Cleverley and Martine Puketapu also hit the back of the net.
WaiBOP got on the board with two goals in the final five minutes through Ella Golding and substitute Lauren Henry.
It was a tough afternoon out for WaiBOP and the irony of Satchell and Christensen scoring four goals was not lost on coach, Juan Propato. “We’ve had a good season so far but today was difficult for us,” said Propato after the match. “We didn’t get going and when you see players who could be playing for us making the difference…well, it’s great for the region but not great for us on the day.”
WaiBOP still has a slim chance of making the top three, but we must beat Northern Football in the next round and hope two other results go our way.
