We begin the post-Christmas period of our ASB Premiership campaign with a trip to Dunedin to take on Southern United.
The match is important for both teams as a win at this stage of the season for either side would be the perfect lift after challenging times pre-Christmas.
WaiBOP United Head Coach, Peter Smith, was in a relaxed mood when we caught up with him prior to the match. “I’m enjoying getting back to the weekly grind of training and games and the ups and downs that come with it,” said Smith after the holiday shut-down. “We had the lads in for a double session last Sunday and they put in an excellent effort – the attitude was superb.”
Smith looks back fondly on his visit to Dunedin last season. “We did pretty well down there last time [the team won 6-1] so we’ll head south feeling positive and looking forward to stepping out on the indoor stadium once again,” said Smith in reference to Forsyth Barr Stadium, the match venue.
“I know, however, that Sunday’s game will be a lot different to last year. I’ve watched Southern a couple of times this season and they’re a well organised, disciplined outfit. They’ve picked up some good results already this season and, I expect, will be targeting this game as another opportunity for three points.”
The match kicks off at 2pm on Sunday January 11.
NOTE: Late venue change – this match will now be played at the Caledonian Ground NOT Forsyth Barr Stadium.
