We’re back at Cambridge’s John Kerkhof Park this weekend as we host ASB Premiership leaders, Team Wellington.
Today is the second leg of our double header against the league’s top two sides. Head Coach, Peter Smith, is, as always, looking positively forward to the match. “Team Wellington will present as much of a challenge for us as Auckland City last Sunday, probably even more so, in fact, as they’re top of the league and will want to stay there,” said Smith ahead of the game. “For us it’s just as important to get something from the game if we want to put ourselves in the play-off mix. It’s so close from third through to ninth that every point we manage to secure will be vital.”
Smith will be happy if his team puts in a similar performance to last week’s effort at Auckland City. “Our trip to Kiwitea Street was everything we expected it to be. But the lads worked hard and competed well against a top side,” explained Smith. “We left with a good understanding of our capability and the areas we need to improve if we’re to get results against the best in the league. Hopefully we can put some of that in to practice on Saturday.
“But it will be far from easy. Team Wellington is showing what needs to be done to take on and beat the Auckland City’s of this world. It’s a template the rest of us should take serious note of. It’s great we get to test ourselves against the best today.”
Team Wellington won the reverse fixture 3-2 earlier in the season, while they did the double over us in season 2013/14.
The match kicks off at 3pm on Saturday. It is preceded by a lunch with special guest speaker, Ricki Herbert.
