The WaiBOP Football women’s team heads into their final home match of the ASB Women’s League with our play-off hopes hanging by a thread.
After two defeats on the trot the side could be forgiven for lacking confidence, but they still have a shot at making the top three and that’s what will drive them forward says coach Juan Propato. “The result last week wasn’t nice but we still have a chance at the play-offs so that’s what we’ll focus on,” said Propato prior to the match against Northern. “Regardless of that however, we want to finish the league strong then we’ll see what happens. If we can pick up the three points then we’ve done our bit. A couple of other results need to go our way, but we can’t influence that.”
Propato is wary of the challenge presented by Northern. “Before the season they were probably one of the favourites to lift the title so they’ll arrive at St Peter’s on Sunday looking to show their quality,” he said. “This will be an excellent game and the side that wants it most will win.”
The match kicks off at 1pm on Sunday at St Peter’s School, Cambridge.
To be sure of a top three finish we need to win, while hoping both the NZF Development team (at Auckland) and Capital (at Central) either lose or, at worst draw. If the NZF Development team draw we would need to win by at least two goals to go above them.
