WaiBOP United is pleased to announce that Tom Probert has re-signed with the franchise ahead of the 2014/15 ASB Premiership season.
Probert, 18, made his ASB Premiership debut for WaiBOP United during the 2013/14 season and went on to make ten appearances for the side. Originally listed as one of the club’s apprentices, Probert made an assured arrival at national league level and was a fixture in the side during the second half of last season.
Probert, who learnt his football in the Bay of Plenty, was delighted to put pen to paper for WaiBOP United. “I think I had a solid debut season and I’m really looking forward to helping the team improve during the upcoming season,” he said after signing. “I’ll always be thankful to Peter for giving me my ASB Premiership debut and I’ll be looking to repay his faith in me this season.”
Peter Smith, WaiBOP United Head Coach, is pleased to retain Probert’s services. “I’ve known Tom a long time, ever since I began working with him at age group level here in the Bay,” said Smith. “You could see back then he had something about him, but his performances over the back end of last season surprised even me. Tom came into the side when we had a couple of injuries, did his job with a minimum of fuss and, by the end of the season, was one of the first names on my team sheet.”
Smith is keen to help Probert develop during the upcoming campaign. “Tom has all the attributes to be a top drawer centre-half,” explains Smith. “Hopefully he can come in, keep improving and make it impossible for me to leave him out. I think he’s well in the mix for next year’s FIFA Under-20 World Cup squad and a strong season with us will help him press his case.”
Peter Arndell, WaiBOP Football Federation Chief Executive, is pleased to see Probert back with WaiBOP United. “Tom’s a youngster who’s come through the system in our region and made the most of his opportunity at the top level last season,” says Arndell. “He’s an important example to other players in the region that if you’re good enough you’ll get your opportunity, no matter what your age is.”
Probert made his debut for WaiBOP United on December 1, 2013, against Wanderers SC at North Harbour Stadium. He was drafted in for an injured Tyler Lissette in a game that finished 3-3. He played his winter 2014 club football for Central League side Wellington Olympic.
Announcements on further player signings will follow soon.
