A fight-back from 2-0 down against previously unbeaten Waikato Bay of Plenty Football has pushed six-time competition winners Auckland Football to the top of the ASB Women’s League after the third round played on Sunday.
Having fallen behind 2-0 at St Peter’s College in Cambridge thanks to goals from Waikato Bay of Plenty’s Ella Golding and Tessa Leong, Auckland looked set for their first defeat of the 2014 competition but three goals in the final half hour to Becky Hawker, Melanie Gooch and Sam Muirhead turned the game around.
The visitors’ winning strike came via midfielder Muirhead – an audacious lob of Waikato Bay of Plenty goalkeeper Georgia Williams from 35 yards giving the former Football South player her second goal in as many weeks.
