Playing their last home fixture of the ASB Women’s League, WaiBOP finally showed their supporters what they were capable of, recording an emphatic 4-0 win against a New Zealand Under 17 Selection.
WaiBOP’s season has been marked by patchy form but the side has always looked capable of a decent win.
The difference was getting off to a strong start.
Captain Alex Shadbolt opened the scoring in the 7th minute, forcing home a corner that was not cleared by the Under 17s.
Less than 10 minutes later, another corner flew over the Under 17s defenders for defender Kylie Jens to head to team mate Tessa Leong who nodded home her fourth goal of the season.
In the second half, WaiBOP took control of possession and Emma Baker set up Jens to score the third of the day.
With seven minutes remaining, substitute Alice Bennett worked down the right and struck a cross that flew off the head of an Under 17s defender and into her own net.
After the game, coach Simon Mead said his team had suffered “a roller coaster” season but had delivered a strong performance at last. The team would now focus on trying to upset league leaders Northern in the last round of the competition next Sunday.
