The first stop on our tour of the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions is the top of the Bombay Hills. While some might say the Bombay’s signal the entrance to Auckland we believe it’s the gateway to the Waikato.
State Highway 1 runs straight over the top of the Bombay Hills. Bombay itself is a settlement that sits just to the east of the highway and close to the town of Pukekohe, off to the west. Bombay was named after the ship Bombay, which landed in Auckland and brought settlers to the area in 1863.
