WaiBOP United has defeated Canterbury United 2-1 in the opening fixture of the 2013/14 ASB Premiership.
Head Coach, Peter Smith, was pleased with his team’s showing. “We played well against what is a good Canterbury side,” said Smith after the win. “We started slow and coughed up a pretty soft goal, but we got better as the match neared half time. Milos’ goal came at the right time for us.”
Smith was delighted with the second half performance put in by his team. “We played some decent stuff at times and, I think, thoroughly deserved the win. Our defence was solid while Masa [Nomoto] and Maksim were strong in the middle of the park,” said Smith. “The two wide men were tireless while Milos and Mikhail proved a real handful up front. I was pleased for Milos with his goal and thought Maksim deserved one after rattling the cross bar earlier.”
WaiBOP is pleased with the win but won’t be getting carried away. “It’s good to start with a win, particularly at home and in our first game. I think the fans will have enjoyed as much as we did,” grinned Smith. “But it’s only one win. We’ve got an entirely different challenge at Kiwitea Street next week, so we’ll get through our recovery then start to focus on that.”
WaiBOP United travels to play Auckland City at Kiwitea Street on Sunday November 17. Kick-off is at 2pm.
